Keep a Bunch, Give a Bunch at Mezger's Zinnia Patch | Woodland,CA
Just north of our new hometown, Woodland, CA, off the I-5, every summer you'll find a delightful patch of colorful flowers, known as Mezger's Zinnia Patch. The field of flowers is lovingly planted and maintained each year by Yolo County resident, Mark Mezger, for all to enjoy. Grab some shears and a bucket and go pickin' with a loved one.
There's just one rule: take a bunch and give a bunch away for someone to enjoy.
From the stories we heard, the Mezger family has delivered dozens of flowers to senior living homes all over Woodland and they hope you'll do the same!
We spent a hot, sun-soaked afternoon buzzing right alongside the bees filling our buckets and vases with a mix of purple, yellow, red and orange flowers that shouted "it's summertime baby!" It is quite literally a breath of fresh air to live in Yolo County, surrounded by open fields producing everything from sunflowers to almonds to wine and olives! I can't help but smile as I drive down the local, quaint country roads that are non-existent in our former hometown in Southern California.
When we got home, I put together a few arrangements in old glass soda and wine bottles for our house and shared the rest with our next door neighbors.
I'm so happy that after traveling last year, we ended up here, where traffic is sparse, people are sweet and there's always something fun to do.
It's completely free to enjoy. If you visit the flower patch, remember to bring some scissors (although they do have a bunch of loaners lying around) and a basket or container for your buds, if you have an extra vase, pay it forward and leave one for the next pickers to take! Water is provided as well, which is a plus, since the heat can cause the flowers to droop.
Shoutout to our friend Jenna for driving us out and braving the sunshine with us.
